How Important is a SAP SCM Certification for an MBA operations student?

SAP has become one of the most in – demand courses across the world today. More and more people across organizations are being encouraged to join this course as it plays an important role in helping them get an idea about the working of business processes in an organization. But at the end of the day, it all boils down to the fact as to the kind of value it is adding to a person’s career. If one is doing just to join the bandwagon, it is completely pointless.

The answer to the above question is – It depends. One needs to consider what he / she wants to do with his / her work and which certification is important. There is a difference between becoming a qualified consultant and becoming a business analyst/manager in a client business. Both, however, need to start with a thorough understanding of how the entire cross functional ERP engine works. The way to accomplish this is with Business Process Certification in SAP (TERP 10), which provides the basis for subsequent other functional certifications, which becomes really important for consultants.

If one wants to build a career on the business side of SCM,  a strong knowledge of the business and maybe experience from SAP implementation projects as SME/BE would be very useful. If you want to be an SAP consultant within SCM, either internal or external, the SAP-certification is more important but even here the business experience in the domain is what counts.

Certification is important for the knowledge it gives, not for the certification, although the certification is important to a level. SAP is a lifelong learning experience and the destination continues to change.
